Supporting Students with ADHD

As an English tutor, I use structured, engaging teaching methods designed specifically for students with ADHD. These techniques improve focus, build confidence, and make learning enjoyable.

Understanding ADHD in Learning

Students with ADHD often experience challenges with:

  • Maintaining attention
  • Organising tasks
  • Processing large amounts of information
  • Managing time

However, with the right teaching strategies, students with ADHD can excel academically and build strong learning habits.

My tutoring focuses on structured support, engaging lessons, and personalised learning techniques.

Teaching Methods I Use:

1. Structured Lessons

Lessons follow a predictable structure to reduce overwhelm.

Example structure:

  • Warm-up activity
  • Focused learning task
  • Practice exercise
  • Review and recap

Benefits:

  • Helps students know what to expect
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Improves concentration

2. Chunking Information

Large tasks are broken into smaller, manageable steps.

Example:

Instead of:
“Write an essay”

We break it into:

  1. Brainstorm ideas
  2. Create a simple plan
  3. Write introduction
  4. Write main paragraphs
  5. Edit together

This helps students stay motivated and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

3. Interactive Learning

Students with ADHD respond well to active engagement.

Methods include:

  • Question-based discussion
  • Quick quizzes
  • Games and challenges
  • Visual aids

This keeps lessons dynamic and maintains attention.

4. Movement and Breaks

Short breaks improve focus and productivity.

Example:

  • 25 minutes learning
  • 3-5 minute break

Activities during breaks:

  • Stretching
  • Quick movement
  • Brain reset

5. Visual Learning Techniques

Many ADHD students learn better visually.

Tools include:

  • Mind maps
  • Colour-coded notes
  • Diagrams
  • Highlighted keywords

These make information easier to process and remember.

4. Building Confidence

ADHD students often struggle with confidence in school.

My tutoring approach focuses on:

  • Positive reinforcement
  • Celebrating small successes
  • Reducing academic pressure
  • Encouraging independent thinking

This helps students build motivation and resilience.

5. Who I Help

  • English reading
  • Essay writing
  • Exam preparation
